A smart contract blockchain platform called Zilliqa has been developed. To increase the number of transactions that may be completed at any one moment, Zilliqa employs a technique known as sharding.

Zilliqa also utilizes a hybrid proof-of-work and Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance consensus process (PoW and pBFT).
The Zilliqa coin, often known as ZIL, is the platform's native cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency ZIL is used to fund blockchain transactions. These fees are used to compensate the nodes that do the blockchain's calculations.
A group of scholars from Singapore's National University established the initiative in 2017. Later, the team established Zilliqa Research to oversee the development of the technology.
